Home Management: My Spring Cleaning Tips! - VIDEO -

Hello friends! I hope you are having a great evening. I am back sharing some of my spring cleaning tips with you all in hopes it answers some of the questions I have been getting. Last year I did the Spring Cleaning Challenge which was basically zone cleaning. If you want to check those blog posts out you can can click here... they are all labeled under Household Tips.

Today I am just sharing some of my own personal tips to take you right through spring cleaning. Its not like it use to be. Really spring cleaning came during a time when a lot of people were using wood stoves and such creating a lot of suet and dust so every spring season they would clean it up. If we just keep up with our daily routines and weekly cleaning, spring cleaning should not be a huge task. I still need to record my morning and afternoon routine but I have have already shared my night time routine where I show how I get the house together every night before we go to bed. I think routines are KEY to keeping your home clean and organized. I have also already shared my cleaning routine for Home Zone 1. I will have zone 2 - The Kitchen - up in the coming weeks but just taking time to reduce clutter and pick up everyday, it will keep the big cleaning days to a minimum. Tips & Tricks: Homemade Fire Starters made w/ all Recycled Materials - Video -

Hello friends! I am back with a wonderful wintertime Tuesday Tip for anyone with a fireplace.Yes, I know it is not Tuesday.. Damn Youtube messed up yesterday so now its a Wonderful Wednesday Tip! Ha!  We burn a lot of wood in our house and to me, nothing is better than a warm cozy fire on a cold winter night. But getting those fires started is not always so easy. You could always buy fire starters for around $20 a box or you could just make you own with things you have in your home already.. and they are so simple.. The video explains everything.. Pictures and directions are below!

These are super easy to make.....

1. I like to use a long piece of wax paper to work on incase any mess and easy clean up.
2. You will need some carton egg cartons. Make sure to use the cardboard egg cartons and not the plastic otherwise you could some pretty nasty fumes in your house.
3. Dryer Lint. We always have dryer lint in our laundry room. We keep it in a old laundry soap box. But if you don't have any - ask for friends to save you theirs. Same for egg cartons too!:)
4. If you don't have dryer lint and really want to make these you could also use a inexpensive roll of toilet paper.
5. Take candles that are pretty used up. I prefer to scrape the wax out instead of trying to put them in the microwave due to the metal parts on the wick. Scrap them into a old pot and melt on the stove. You could also buy some very cheap candles at the dollar store and still make these without costing a lot.
6. While the candle wax is melting start stuffing each egg hole with a golf ball size ball of the lint or toilet paper.
8. Drizzle the candle wax over the lint allowing it to seep into the egg cartons.
9. Allow the wax to dry and harden ( I sat it outside in the cold and it didn't take long for the wax to harden. )
10. Get your fireplace ready. Be sure you are using a fireplace that you can actually really burn wood in it. Not a electric or a fake fireplace. Take out any old ashes. Put your little pieces of kindling - small wood pieces - on bottom and only stack 3 or so pieces of firewood on top. Leave room for oxygen to flow through the fire.
11. Break off a couple of the lint rounds. I like to use 3 per fire. One on each side and in the middle.
12. Lite the lint rounds - they should last about 15 minutes each - allowing you to get a really hot fire.
13. Sit back and enjoy!

Tuesday Tips & Tricks _ How to Properly Clean your Wood Cutting Board - Video

Hello friends. I hope you are having a nice evening. I have lacked with blogging and videos today due to my heavy heart over our kitty Gabby. She is still in the animal hospital and we are unsure and awaiting the outcome of the test. So its been a difficult day to say the least. However, last week I got this video ready for you guys.. so I am going ahead and posting it.

So many of us have wood cutting boards that just are not being cleaned right. Its so simple to clean a wood cutting board. I don't even use water. Keep in mind I use glass or plastic cutting boards for meats and fish. But I use wood for everything else. I have been hard on my wood cutting boards. A few times I spilled food coloring on it a couple times that I never got out but its ok. Cutting boards take the abuse and stand up well to it. I have paid big prices for some of my cutting boards and really want to take care of them. If you do happen to get your board really wet, its best to stand it up on its side to keep it from warping.

This is how I was taught to do it in Culinary School.

Tuesday Tips : $ Money Saving Coffee Tip! $

When I had to start buying my own coffee in college, I quickly realized it was more expensive than I ever dreamed up. On mom and dads budget I was able to enjoy some of the best coffee ever which spoiled me. In my attempt to figure out a way to keep buying good coffee and save money, my grandmother gave me an awesome tip.. Wanna see what it is!?  Check out my video below!

How To Give a Cat a Bath.. EASILY! { Video }

Hi friends! I hope you are having a wonderful day. I thought I would take a few minutes to explain how I bathe kitty cats. I know this is a daunting task for many.. but it doesn't have to be hard. Just start as early as you can.. I like to give first baths around 8 weeks and then monthly after that. The sooner you get them use to it, the easier it will be. The video below has more helpful tips to make the process as easy as possible!

It’s much easier to wash your cat in a kitchen or bathroom sink than bending over a tub. Following is a step-by-step procedure for the quick and painless cat bath:

• Fill the sink with about 2 or 3 inches of warm (but not hot!) water
• Wet the cat from the shoulders to the tail and apply shampoo.
• Just like your own hair, lather and rinse thoroughly
• Since most cats hate having water splashed on their faces, use a damp washcloth to gently clean your cat’s head.
• Use a cotton ball to clean inside the cat’s ears. Never put any kind of object (not even a Q-Tip) in your cat’s ear.
• After a thorough rinsing, lift your cat onto a large towel and fold it around him.
• Rub as much water from their fur as possible
• Long-haired cats may require the use of a blow dryer, but only if the noise does not terrify them. Set it on low and see if the cat will tolerate it.

It’s best if you have the time to purchase a shampoo specifically formulated for cats. If you don’t have any cat shampoo, a mild baby shampoo may be used. You don’t want to use any other kinds of human cleaning products, as it may sting your cat’s eyes or irritate their skin.

Tuesday Tips & Tricks: How to Keep Your Baseboards Clean from Dust & Pet Hair LONGER!

Happy Tuesday! For today's Household Trick/Tip is how to keep your baseboards clean from pet hair and dust longer. I hate cleaning boards. Its a job I hate but really a job I have to probably every couple of months depending on the room. I do break it up by room and take my time but this little trick works really well to help with the dust, dirt, and pet hair. We have a pretty animal friendly home..and kids.. which is a bad combination for baseboards! But just break out some fabric softener sheets and it will cut the amount of your baseboard cleaning in half!

Tuesday Tips...Washer Not Filling up? Don't Panic! Instead, Try These Quick Tips! { Video }

I know I am running a bit late tonight. I haven't felt really good today so I am behind on everything! Yesterday, my washer was not filling up. Instead the water would run and run but it simply would not fill up. I pretty much went into a panic trying to figure out how to get it fixed. And do it alone because it was many hours before husby would be home. And I have no patience! 

So here are some quick tips that I am sharing in case you ever run into this problem yourself.

Terrific Tips Tuesday! { How to really get your Glass Top Stove Clean! - Video }

Hi everyone! I hope you are having a great day. I have been out.. ran errands.. worked on editing a new kitty video...but I had to share with you guys what finally worked to get our stove clean! When we moved into this house, there were rings all around the burners on the stove. I hated it. It wasn't our food on there and nothing I used would take it off. I tried the Mr. Clean Erasers ( that I use and love all the time ).. I tried SOS Pads, De Greasers..nothing worked. So I finally got a bright idea.. check it out for yourself!

Tuesday Tips & Tricks

Summer is here for us in North Carolina.. and we have a bee problem on our back deck. There are huge wood bees that buzz all around. I am hoping this very simple trick will work when we are planning on being out there!

Put about 10 cloves in 1/2 a lemon and set out. They do not like the scent. Perfect for outdoor gatherings!

Tuesday Tips & Tricks [ How to make berries last! ]

I know it's almost Wednesday but here is today's tip! I have been buying alot of berries lately. I have been finding some great deals on fresh strawberries at my local store... and as we get closer to summer, the berries will get even better! But if you are not careful, they will mildew and rot in no time. There are days when we eat the entire carton and then there are days when they get passed over. If they are not properly cared for, you could really be wasting not only your food but your money too. And lets face it, paying $4 for a pint of raspberries and then noticing the next day they are all moldy with that nasty fuzz growing on them SUCKS! 

Tuesday Tips & Tricks - Making Spiders Stay Away! -

Spring has sprung and that means lots more critters trying to get in our homes. Last week I posted about how to get rid of those unbearable little ants.. and I got a lot of questions about spiders.. so here is what I dug up!

I have also read that ....

Simply fill a spray bottle with tap water and add 10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil. Give it a smell to make sure the water smells minty, if not add a few more drops. Then you simply need to spray the peppermint water in the cracks and gaps where spiders can enter your home.

Spiders do not like peppermint oil. The strong smell will send them scurrying in the other direction and away from your home.

For an even more potent remedy add one or two drops of peppermint oil onto a cotton bud and place in the areas where spiders enter. It’s as simple as that!

Tuesday Tips & Tricks!

Spring has offically started here in North Carolina and that means.. ANTS & BUGS!! The other day I noticed some black ants coming in at the back door. There were only a few but that was wayyyyy too many for me! So I decided to take action NOW instead of just trying to kill them one by one. I do not like killing anything.. including ants but I can't handle any kind of bug being in my home!

So here is a handy solution that should work for anyone dealing with this little pests!

Ingredients:

1 cup sugar

3 tablespoons boric acid

3 cups warm water

Directions:

1. Mix the sugar and boric acid well.

2. Add the warm water slowly, mixing all the while so it won't be too lumpy.

3. Store in a jar until ready to use.

4. When ready to use, put cotton into the top of a jar lid to fill it and then saturate the cotton to the top.

5. Place it in the location where it is needed.

6. Note: This solution will keep for a long while. A good technique is to drip a drop or two over the edge of the lid to rest on the counter so the ants will find the solution sooner. It sometimes takes a little while for them to find it, but find it they will. When they do, do not disturb them as they drink. They will hang over the edge of the lid and drink for a while and then take it back to the nest killing the colony. Almost overnight they will be gone. I actually poured a lot of this solution around the back door.. and in the window sills just to try to prevent any from coming in!

Tuesday Tips and Tricks! - Sponge Ice packs -

With a house full of little kids in the summers these little ice packs work great. There is always a kid who hurt themselves from playing too rough outside. You can find the cheap sponges at the dollar store and grab a bag of good ziplocks before you check out and your set!

We keep a shelf in the door in the freezer full with little ice packs.. and they come in handy all the time!

Tuesday Tips & Tricks.. Amazing Tub Scrub!

My bathtub has never been whiter!! Works great on glass shower doors too- no more soap residue! Martha Stewart's Tub Scrub--works better than any other cleaning product to get off hard water and soap residue

Here's a nontoxic but effective way to clean your tub: Add one teaspoon of liquid soap and several drops of an antibacterial essential oil (such as tea tree, eucalyptus, rosemary, or peppermint) to one cup of baking soda. Add just enough water to form a paste, and use it with a sponge or brush to scour bathtub surfaces.

Scrub.. Scrub..Scrub.. 

and you will get a

very clean white bathtub.. and I used Tea Tree Oil. 

Really works!
