Monday Movie Review: Zero Dark Thirty

Monday, January 28, 2013

I am so behind on movie reviews..but tonight I would like to take a few minutes to talk to you about Zero Dark Thirty. I am sure many of you have heard of this movie.. who hasn't right?

Just in case you haven't.. here is what the movie is about..

For a decade, an elite team of intelligence and military operatives, working in secret across the globe, devoted themselves to a single goal: to find and eliminate Osama bin Laden. Zero Dark Thirty reunites the Oscar winning team of director-producer Kathryn Bigelow and writer-producer Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) for the story of history's greatest manhunt for the world's most dangerous man. -- (C) Official Site

So when I was hearing about this movie..I thought it was going to be mostly a military type of movie.. but to my surprise, it was mostly about the woman who worked nonstop for YEARS to catch Osama bin Laden. And let me tell you.. Jessica Chastaine delivered. Her role in this movie was total opposite than her part in The Help. This time she wasn't so bubbly and sweet.

Here's the trailer..

I think this movie sheds a lot of light on detainee and torture programs. Its not easy to watch it either. I don't personally like the idea of torture to get answers because I think the more you hurt a man.. or woman they will eventually tell you whatever you want to hear to just make the pain stop. But I am not there.. and I really can't second guess the CIA. I guess it works more times than not and that's what matters. But after I saw Zero Dark Thirty, a friend asked me, " During the torture scenes, who did you feel empathy for the most -- the American torturer or the Arab suspect? That was easy to answer..." Oh God, the poor guy being waterboarded. The torturer was a serious man.. and wasn't playing games.. Its hard to get the scenes out of your head after you watch the film.

What I didn't like about the movie is they kept refering to her as " The Girl ". That kinda pisses me off. But I am sure that's the way it actually was.  Even at the very end, they didn't use her name.. She was a ghost and from what I have read.. The Real Woman who Jessica played, is still in the field working. And let me tell you.. this determined woman makes me feel safer already. This bitch was relentlessness. She handled herself BETTER than all her male counterparts and in the end it showed.

Its hard to make a movie when you know the end.. and the world already knows how it ends too.. But this movie delivered.. and it was worth sitting there for three hours watching it. By time it ended Scott and I both were exhausted and we were both checking our watches over and over because it was sooooo long. But again.. its worth it.

So of course I am giving this movie..

because just Jessica's portrayl of Mya.. was AMAZING. I am seriously loving her work. She is an amazing actress and I think she will be around for a very long time. And I can't end this review without talking about Kathryn Bigelow who directed the movie.. Another amazing woman who shot this movie says she would have been “whitewashing” history if she had chosen not to include scenes of enhanced interrogation. She took a lot of heat for the torture scenes.. which she is having to go to Senate Hearings because it was the CIA who gave her a lot of the information about what happened in catching Bin Laden...which now is suppose to not be real. BULLSHIT. You know torture happens.. but they just don't want us to know it. But again.. who are we to second guess this?  This lead them to him!!  The " ENHANCED INTERROGATION "  is sometimes useful it seems.  And the point of all of this is..

Osama bin Laden was found and shot dead.. while I am not someone who dances to another persons death but I think it was so necessary to end his existence for the safety of not just the US but to the world.

Don't miss this movie. It really does document the journey that ONE WOMAN TOOK.. who never gave up.. never backed down.. to catch one of the worst men on this planet.. and that's HISTORY.

I can't wait to see it again.
