TEST BATCH - Homemade Strawberry Roll ups! -

Thursday, May 31, 2012

Hello everyone! I wanted to get this first batch up for you guys of the strawberry fruit roll ups. My grandmother Watteau had made her own cookbook ( post coming later ) and she had not 1 but 2 fruit roll up recipes in it. I had searched high and low for this book..and the other day I finally found it!! Super Excited.

As I said, there were 2 different recipes. The first one requires no cooking.. and the second one required a few minutes on the stove before going into the oven. To see my 2nd Peach Raspberry Batch Click here!

So yesterday, I tried out the one where there is no cooking involved.. and right now I have a batch in that I did have to cook. I think my grandmother used the cooking method the most.. because I know it took longer than what it did for this recipe.

Heres the recipe in full.

2 cups of fruit
Honey or agave nectar to taste.

Thats it.. See this is a very simple recipe..  And when you make it yourself, you’re making it without sugar, food coloring, , and without artificial flavors...and without all those preservatives that just are not good for you.  Just fruit, nothing else. The other recipe has sugar..

Here are the step by step instructions..

Here is everything you are going to need..

Start with high quality strawberries. These were the best I could find.. but try not to use those crunchy big ones that taste like crap. You’ll need about 2 cups of strawberries. Also preheat your oven to 175 degrees.

You will also need a baking sheet, cooking spray, and waxed paper.

You will also need a food processor or blender.

Cut the tops off the strawberries (be sure to wash them first!)

Throw them in a blender or food processor and

and process until smooth.

Then give it a taste and see if it needs some

sweetener is needed–if the fruit was ripe, they should be just fine..  but if the berries were a little tart, stir in honey or agave nectar to taste..this is the natural way to sweeten them.

Then give it

another whiz to mix it all up.

Then spay your rimmed cookie sheet

with cooking spray and then add

Use a spatula to spread the strawberry puree so it covers the baking sheet evenly. This might take a little time, but it’s an important step.. I beat it on the table a few times to get it even.

Place baking sheet on the center rack of the oven.

Fruit does varie in water content and ovens vary in how they cook, there is no way to know exactly how long the fruit will need to bake in the oven.. ( One of those oven gages really help to see if your oven really cooks at the temp it says! )  This particular batch took 6 1/2 hours, which seems to be about right for fruit roll up recipes. It can take up to 8 1/2 hours to bake. So just be patient and keep checking it.
You may notice the edges of the fruit roll ups are done before the center if it wasn't spread evenly.. If thats the case, just go ahead and cut off the cooked edges and return it to the oven. You can even flip it over if you want!
I think putting it in at bed would work out great for many familys. My batch that is in the oven now.. will be done around 12-1 am... which will work out just fine for us.
Now this is where I messed up a little. I should have

laid out the waxed paper first but instead I did it

afterwards.. I should mention I cut the fruit roll ups with a pizza cutter and removed them to the cutting board.

When I realized I had messed up.. I just put the fruit roll ups under the waxed paper. cut it. and

then while they were warm, I rolled them up!

I stored them in a glass jar that seals shut to

keep them fresh.

My Thoughts..

Since this is a test batch.. I will say I don't think the honey sweetened them good enough. I find them a little tart and I am hoping that the other way will bring me to the same fruit roll ups I had growing up! I think these are a very healthy version.. and thats great but I think they will be better with some sugar instead of honey.

This batch is good but I am thinking the batch in the oven will be better! This time I have raspberry peach fruit roll ups baking away in the oven. And that is with the way of cooking method.. I will have those pictures posted tomorrow.. Its the same way with any fruit combinations.

I would consider this no cooking fruit roll ups fast and easy.. child friendly.. and healthy... this is great for kids to help out with..

My kids have already ate a bunch of these.. and I am betting the next batch will be amazing.
I did not get it spread evenly and the edges did cook a little sooner than the middle.. so I just cut them off and returned the pan to the oven!

I will be sure to link this post with tomorrows raspberry peach fruit roll ups using the cooking method and you can figure out which one your family will like the best!

xoxo
