Helloooo! I hope you are all having a great night. Around here the house is shut down and I am blogging from bed. Which is seriously one of my most favorite places on earth! I was ahead of the game tonight. I got a early bath... I think I was in there around 7pm.. then I finished up dinner.. ate with the boys and waited on husby to get home. He was playing in a bowling fundraiser for a little girl with cancer. His boss sponsored a bunch of the guys to do it.. so it was a little later than normal. Honestly it was the last thing I wanted after him working so many hours this past week but he couldn't get out of it.

Well morning has struck again. I guess at this point I should just be happy God woke me up for yet another day. However, I am a little grumpy because I hate mornings. Why do they have to be so hard? I wake up to an aching body and heavy eyes. I feel like shit.. and I am ready to go right back to bed. I am sure today will go pretty easy with Brandon here so I might stay up and watch the news and then try to drift back to sleep for a few hours. Why not?  There are perks to not working outside the house and naps are one of them. I just wish Scott was here to snuggle up with me. I love waking up next to him but rarely get to do it. Again.. come on Friday! 

Jackson was such a grump this morning. He sure didn't want to get out of bed. It was next to impossible to get him ready and out the door on time. 


He pouted all the way to school because he couldn't go back home and go to bed. In fact, he was oh so kind to point out that I get to go back to sleep. Ha! I spent YEARS in school... and Jackson has many years left.. so he just better get over it! 

I am not sure what I am doing today. I might just stay up and get some things done or I might just do as Jackson says.. and go back to bed! I am sure Brandon is loving sleeping in today too. Too bad husby isn't here.. because it would make today perfect if I had him to snuggle up with!

So with School starting around here tomorrow.. its time to get these Back to School posts done! If you didn't see part 1, check here!! Its a big post with lots of great tips!

  technology and homework!

I was watching the news when friendly



Clark Howard popped on to talk about what you should and shouldn't be paying for computers for the kids.

His advice was to spend no more than $250 per computer for the kids. He thinks that the models in this price range are perfect for kids who don't need a lot of the bells and whistles..

My personal opinion, is you should have 1 family computer that sits right up against a wall in the living room. That way, you can see everything they are doing.. HOWEVER, in our house.. the kids have laptops. I would totally change that if I thought it would work for our family. Our kids travel back and forth to their fathers house and they take their computers back and forth with them. But really, it goes against everything I believe is right. Because this is the case in our house, I keep a very open eyes to what the kids are doing online. I have complete control over every account and I have no problems taking away the computers if I need to. I think the parents can still have private laptops but keeping a computer in your busiest area is a much better idea.




Another great tip is.. don't worry about buying fancy software.. ( if you do find it necessary be sure to check for student discounts )

Open Office is very similar to Word and is totally free. 



You can find it here.. Click the download button at the top and you are set. I downloaded it a few days ago and like it a lot. Its very similar to Word and easy to use.



Smart phones have really changed many of our lives.. my especially. My daughter even carries a new blackberry torch.. ( I spy on that all the time too!! ) More and More kids and parents are using these little computer phones to make everything easy.

For middle school I think the Khan App is amazing. 

It’s largely based around videos which Khan initially uploaded to YouTube while trying to teach his cousin, Nadia, maths from the other side of the country. The videos became so popular that he quickly left his job as a hedge fund analyst and began working on the site full time.With access to more than 3,000 video lessons that you can either stream from the site or download and watch any time you don’t have a connection. You won’t find every subject represented just yet. There is heavy bias toward the sciences - including a particularly good maths section - but the humanities category seems to be growing and the finance and economy one is an extensive eye-opener.

Khan’s teaching style and personality aren’t going to be to everybody’s taste but the lessons are undeniably good. They run from the absolute basics, such as simple addition, all the way up to heavy calculus and beyond, and the whole app is really as interesting for those just looking to broaden their horizons as it is for students seeking an alternative way of understanding something that’s been troubling them in class. Great App!!

For high school students I think the My Homework App is a great way to keep organized. 

The key would be making sure they actually used it which in my house means.. setting it all up for them. With this handy app reminders will be flying in so there will be no excuses for late or missing assignments.

Designate and clear a place to do homework.



Older children should have the option of studying in their room or a quiet area of the house. Younger children usually need an area set aside in the family room or kitchen to facilitate adult monitoring, supervision, and encouragement.



Make sure to schedule enough time to get all the homework done.


A lot of times, kids wait till wait too late to get things done... making it much more stressful rushing to get it finished. 







TV should stay off during homework time.


My kids would love to have the tv on while doing their homework but in my house no tv during that time. Its too hard to focus on something you really like on tv and focus on dreaded homework. TV would win every time around here! So.. until homework is done.. tvs are off.


Be available to help.


Kids should not just have to sit down at a table and do homework alone. You should be there to supervise, answer questions, offer assistance but never do the homework for them. They have to learn it.


Take Breaks..


Kids eyes get tired a lot quicker than adults. It may be helpful to close the books for a few minutes, stretch, and take breaks.

Take Charge


Stay in touch with the teacher. For me, emails work best. Keep communication open about how your child is doing and what they need to improve. If your child is struggling with a particular subject, a tutor could be the answer. Talk it over with your childs teacher and they should help give you some suggestions.

I find that homework is where I strive at. I learned some really good study skills in college that work well for kids of all ages. I will be sharing them with you as the dog days of school start back up!

I love posting the history and each holiday came about..I found some of this on different sites and thought I should share it with you guys! 



History of July 4th

On July 4th, 1776, America started an insurrection against the king. Thirteen years before, back in 1763, England instituted a series of taxes and policies that not only hindered trade and economic growth in the colonies, but without representation in Parliament, also violated their rights as English subjects.
It took the early Americans 9 years to understand the futility of appealing to England, all the while enduring the heavy hand of the king. Committees were formed in 1772, exploring options for a Congress of our own. Our first Continental Congress convened in 1774. The following year, 1775, our Congress was declared traitorous and British troops, sent to quell the uprising met resistance from the colonial militia and the Revolutionary War began.

One year later, representatives from all 13 colonies voted unanimously to adopt a Declaration of Independence and break free from the yoke of England.
It took another 7 years of fighting until in 1781, when America claimed victory and in 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed acknowledging America as an independent nation.
Although the Congress voted on the 2nd, it was two days later, on July 4th, 1776, that America formally and boldly proclaimed to the entire world that we would no longer consider ourselves subjects of the British Empire.
The text of our Declaration of Independence was finalized and approved that very day.
So each year, what we celebrate for one day, on July 4th, was in truth, a 20 year struggle for independence.Our Declaration of Independence stands today as one of the most profound declarations ever written.  

 This is a great history lesson for any little ones you have in your home. Its not easy trying to teach history but I really think they should know that we are lightening fireworks off for a reason tonight.. not just because its something cool to do in the summer! 



4th of July History & Trivia -Did You Know…

  • The major objection to being ruled by Britain was taxation without representation. The colonists had no say in the decisions of English Parliament.
  • In May, 1776, after nearly a year of trying to resolve their differences with England, the colonies sent delegates to the Second Continental Congress. Finally, in June, admitting that their efforts were hopeless; a committee was formed to compose the formal Declaration of Independence. Headed by Thomas Jefferson, the committee also included John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Philip Livingston and Roger Sherman. On June 28, 1776, Thomas Jefferson presented the first draft of the declaration to Congress.
  • Betsy Ross, according to legend, sewed the first American flag in May or June 1776, as commissioned by the Congressional Committee.
  • Independence Day was first celebrated in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776.
  • The Liberty Bell sounded from the tower of Independence Hall on July 8, 1776, summoning citizens to gather for the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence by Colonel John Nixon.
  • June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress, looking to promote national pride and unity, adopted the national flag. “Resolved: that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
  • The word ‘patriotism’ comes from the Latin patria, which means ‘homeland’ or ‘fatherland.’
  • The first public Fourth of July event at the White House occurred in 1804.
  • Before cars ruled the roadway, the Fourth of July was traditionally the most miserable day of the year for horses, tormented by all the noise and by the boys and girls who threw firecrackers at them.
  • The first Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi occurred at Independence Creek and was celebrated by Lewis and Clark in 1805.
  • On June 24, 1826, Thomas Jefferson sent a letter to Roger C. Weightman, declining an invitation to come to Washington, D.C., to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It was the last letter that Jefferson, who was gravely ill, ever wrote.
  • Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on Independence Day, July 4, 1826.
  • The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence did not sign at the same time, nor did they sign on July 4, 1776. The official event occurred on August 2, 1776, when 50 men signed it.
  • The names of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were withheld from the public for more than six months to protect the signers. If independence had not been achieved, the treasonable act of the signers would have, by law, resulted in their deaths.
  • Thomas McKean was the last to sign in January, 1777.
  • The origin of Uncle Sam probably began in 1812, when Samuel Wilson was a meat packer who provided meat to the US Army. The meat shipments were stamped with the initials, U.S. Someone joked that the initials stood for “Uncle Sam”. This joke eventually led to the idea of Uncle Sam symbolizing the United States government.
  • In 1941, Congress declared 4th of July a federal legal holiday. It is one of the few federal holidays that have not been moved to the nearest Friday or Monday.

Independence Day Trivia & Facts – An Inspired America:

  • Thirty places nationwide with “liberty” in their name. Liberty, Missouri (26,232) boasts the highest population of the 30 at 26,232. Iowa has more of these places than any other state at four: Libertyville, New Liberty, North Liberty and West Liberty.
  • Eleven places have “independence” in their name. The most populous of these is Independence, Missouri, with 113,288 residents.
  • Five places adopted the name “freedom.” Freedom, California, with 6,000 residents, has the largest population among these.
  • There is one place named “patriot” — Patriot, Indiana, with a population of 202.
  • And what could be more fitting than spending the day in a place called “America”? There are five such places in the country, with the most populous being American Fork, Utah, with 21,941 residents. Check out American Fact Finder.

Just a quick hello before I drift off to sleep. Hope you had a great Wednesday! My dinner went really well tonight with Scott's boss. I really didn't think that I should have been entertaining tonight but I just rolled with it and it went well. I will have a few pictures up tomorrow of it. 

Besides that today was nothing too special. There was some drama going around.. thankfully not with Scott.. but really I think I was set up, lied to, pushed around and to be very honest.. it didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. I at least know now what and who I am dealing with. Nothing appears as it seems in regard to this situation but I am going to go on and not worry about someone else s insecurities or drama. I have many more good things to think about.. such as Brittany and Jackson.. They will be here in 3 days!!!!!!! I can't wait!! Summer is always so exciting for us. And this year we are adding an extra little boy so its going to be more busy and more exciting! We are going to have the kid house this year with 2, 9 year old  boys and a 10 year old little girl. One thing Scott was telling me in the car is that he is really not looking forward to all the kid friendly meals. Every summer he complains that I am not making food for him but instead I am making food for the kids. I think they are going to have to adjust because I am not a short order cook and I don't plan on making 2 different meals a night. Jackson is the pickiest and cooking for him is not always easy.. but I can't cater to him every night either.

I have lined everything up with the housesitter.. and he come take care of the animals and house while we are gone. I thought my girlfriend was going to come over and keep a watch on things but I got our schedules confused so not this time..but thats the good thing about having more than 1 person to help out.

Another Great App - Diptic -

I found another great App friends!! I love sharing apps with you guys because I get so much feedback on each one! I guess I am not the only one on a hunt for great apps. I have a Samsung Galaxy S but 99 % of the apps I share are avilable on the iphones. Maybe they started out on the iphones and then came to the Android market.. not sure, but happy to have this latest one!


Diptic is an  app ( for both android and iphone users )  for creating simple collages of your photos.It does cost $.99 but I think its pretty good for the price.


 The templates are designed in the shape of a square, so Diptic is commonly used in conjunction with Instagram. In fact, Diptic has Instagram as an export option, making sharing to the photo social networking app a breeze.


Diptic comes with 21 standard layouts and is equipped with a frame slider that allows you to customize the dimensions of the inner frames. You can also adjust the colors of the borders and give them rounded corners. In addition to Instagram, you can send your collages to Camera+, Filterstorm, Dropbox, Evernote, GoodReader, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, Posterous, or Tumblr.
