Tour of BILTMORE Estates ~ Winery ~

Thursday, March 24, 2011
We had to walk all the way back to the parking lot and go about 2 miles back further into the estate.. BTW..the driveway from the road to the house is 3 miles long..Imagine that with horse and buggie..But they did get a car and they also had a train system set up from their house to the city..

But anyway, we drove past a few lakes where there were actually people there fishing and we got to another great area..

The Shops and Winery..

We got there..

And joined up with the Wine Tour and tasting..

That barrel was actually used for wine..The barrels get 3 uses..First use is always for white wine and then the next to uses are red wines..Then the barrels are used around the Estate and at times they even sell them in the Biltmore Garden Center.

We walked under this trellis that I can only imagine looks amazing leading into the winery..

Here we go..
Stone wall..
This use to be the dairy area of the Estate..
They had tons of milking cows..But this was turned into the winery in 70's.

They were telling us about the barrels here..

And here she was telling us that this is the old French way of making champagne.

Here is some really old wines from the estate..

This table is in the winery and was made from a very old famous tree that was on the property..

Here is the winery itself!

These things are huge..I think these hold 5,000 gallons each!

The smell was pretty strong out here..

They can get to the wine from the top for testing..

Here is the clock tower.. It actually has to be wound every Sunday..

This is the 1913 Stevens-Duryea Model C-6 that was bought for Edith Vanderbilt but their daughter Corneila drove it the most!

Only 10 in existence..

And I'm not sure why they keep this in the winery.

Going further into the winery.

Champagne room.. No work was going on in there..

Wine that can go any where!

Then it was tasting time!!

I hate that you can only stand.. That's how all wine testings are..

Time to pick some wines to taste

Lots to pick from

Time to try some!!

Here's are bartender

Me trying the Riesling..

We actually tried a lot of the wines..None really tasted that good to either Scott or myself..Really strange..Because we really like wine..

So inside we went to pay for premium wine testing..

Lets hope we find one of these we like..

Birthday Toast!!

We didn't really find a wine that we liked here either..They are made like French Wines and they were really dry..Scott likes dry most of the time but didn't find any wine he liked either!

We wondered around the winery and then headed in the direction of the farm!!!
